We have just found out that there is a limit to the space reserved for image attachments on this free site.
1) Upload the image you wish to share to an online photo sharing site, such as Flickr 2) Click on the Share Photo icon 3) Click the BBCode button, then copy and paste the generated code directly into your Wabi post
The advantage of this method is that it does not use up image attachment space, images can be greater than 1 Mb in size and there are no limits on the number of images in a post. You may need to adjust your privacy settings if you want people to be able to click on the image and view it full size.
One of the original advantages of this site is that photos were easy to upload. A work around such as this will discourage people from using. If it works I think it would be better to periodically clear pictures on old posts. Having said that, there haven't been that many posts so storage must be quite limited. I do not use Flickr. I might investigate using but having already recently taken on board Facebook for wildlife discussions and also contributing records to irecord I am reluctant to spend even more time on computer matters. I am sure others may feel the same.
Unfortunately, I think that the solution is that we will have to go and delete older images.
When Snowlynx set this up, we didn't realise that storage space was so limited... I guess in most forums, there isn't the need for image space like a wildlife site requires.
The way that they list images in the admin section doesn't date list them, (we thought the ones at the bottom of the list were the oldest) which is why yours were mistakenly deleted, Alf- I do apologise for that!
I'm going to go into the system this evening and take out my older images, to free up some space... I got so used to uploading photos at WAB I took it for granted, I guess!
This means, that unfortunately this is going to cause this site to be not very useful for archiving things- and it looks like a gallery is definitely out, (the fees are really high, once the storage space gets larger.)
I agree with lizb- I also don't want the hassle of going into Flickr and dealing with all that, (just not techie enough) so what I will do is start removing any photos over two months old.
sorry, everyone... I hate to have to do it, but we were forum-novices when we started this up, and so are sort of learning as we go along.
I appreciate what you are doing. We need something that is straightforward for you too. Although a gallery would be great, I don't think there is that much need to refer to pictures after say two months. So can you set up something to automatically delete these? Another thing, present picture size is limited to1 MB. 500 KB was sufficient on WAB and you could ask everyone to restrict their pictures to this.
I agree with lisb - no need for such big or high definition image files most of the time - many of mine are less than 300KB - I know - it probably shows! I was a bit intimidated by the high standard of other peoples' images on Flickr - but I do use photobucket and found the learning curve not too steep really.
I understand space is limited but if at all possible I would like uploaded photos to remain in the threads. It is sometimes useful to be able to look back at tha thread with a photo you remember to check something. In the thread about ID, if the photo are rmeoved the thread might as well be removed too.
I agree with alf, size of the photos could be limited. Another forum I use limits uploads to 200KB and the images are fine for forum use. Uploading images to hosting sites (eg Photobucket) takes a little more time it is no more difficult than uploading them to here. If can learn to do it, anyone can.
I would not mind if continued to be used and more people posted, but I suspect cost will deter members. a lot of us have joined are ex WAAB but a lot of people have moved to other free forums or, like myself, are using them as well.
