On-going problem with suet pellets Aug 12, 2019 19:23:39 GMT

I've tried using suet pellets for several years now, and it's just not working.
The way I feed them is by putting them inside a mesh dish wired to the bottom of a cage, a bit like this one...
The problem is that suet pellets are simply too large for a small bird to swallow in one go. They carry a pellet away and then eat it in the safety of a hedge or shrub, but it usually crumbles into pieces in the process. Then the bird flies down to the ground to finish it, and that's the issue.
I live on the fringes of North London, in a terrace and we are surrounded in every direction by cats. Dozens of them... there are ten (at least) that are in very close proximity to us, and that's just the ones I know of. Recently it's become a non-stop battle, and I'm fed-up tired of it.
They lie in wait under the hedge, beneath the shrubs... a few days ago I looked out and one was scaling the small apple tree overhanging the pond in an attempt to get at one of the feeders. They use the garden as a litter box, and spray all around the place... scrubbing the bins has become a regular occurrence- the outsides of them. I've cut the undersides of the hedge to try and expose their hiding places, but this doesn't always work. I can't use cat repellents because of our foxes, much as I'd like to.
I've tried cutting orange peels or raw garlic into tiny pieces and scattering around any place they lurk... some aromotherapy oils I had which had gone off were put to the same use, but they don't last long. One good rain, and I have to start all over again.
Any bird who drops a bit of suet and is tempted to retrieve it becomes an instant cat-toy, (they never eat what they kill... just maul it around a bit) so it looks as though pellets are off the menu, unless I can find exceptionally small ones.
I have every sympathy for the Australians who are imposing curfews on cats due to the destructive impact they are having on wildlife down there.
Right- rant over... just needed to vent.
