Good evenng everyone, Having dragged myself (my beloved actually did the dragging) into the 21st century by buying an iphone/ipad - whatever... Can anyone recommend an app for stargazing? Preferably free!
Looking forward to hearing from you. Cheers, Tony.

I've encountered a problem, if I try and download the app where you can aim the phone at an object n the sky and the screen tells you what you are pointing at, you need to download a digital compass. I try and do this but a message comes up telling me " No Magnetic Sensor!". My divice [sic] doesn't seem to have one. So the application I most wanted, I cannot have! Oooh RATS! Cheers, Tony.
I know what you mean. Although having a compass in the phone wasn't an absolute priority for me I would have quite fancied it, but my phone also does not have one.
A couple of suggestions.
Use the Plough(the one which is part of the Great Bear, not a pub ) to find the North Star(also not a pub). At present the Plough is high up in the northeastern sky around 8pm.
If you are happy to use some of your data to link to the internet while you are out and have your location turned on. Log on to Google Maps and it will bring up the map of where you are and you might be able to find N, S, E, or W from the features on the ground and the maps.
