Snowlynx and I went to B&Q a few days ago to pick up some bits and pieces, and you can imagine how thrilled I was to discover a pallet just inside the store with big bags of massively reduced bird seed on it. Snowlynx's face was a bit like this....
One of the bags was Peckish sunflower hearts- marked down to FIVE POUNDS.... what a bargain! Of course I had to get it.
So now I've got a twelve kilogram bag of sunflower hearts sitting here, and it wasn't until I got it home that I realised why it was so cheap. The best-by date is smudged, but it looks like it says Mar. 2019. Oops.
I've been googling how to keep them, (roasting doesn't extend their shelf-life by much) but it seems freezing them does... up to a year. I now have to rearrange the freezer to accomodate as many ice cream tubs full of sunflower seeds as possible.
I've already warned the birds out in the garden- mealtimes from now until Christmas are going to be extremely plentiful, but somewhat lacking in variety.
