Whats involved in this "registering"? I didnt bother last year, had a look and all they seemed interested in was all my details so they can bombard me with stuff I am not interested in. Used to do it, but it put me off last year. Sure it used to be simpler.
Alan, I just now did it, and it's so you have the option to either order a pack through the post or record your findings online on the day.
Personally, I prefer to have a form to fill in and send back to them, (past years the webside couldn't cope and kept crashing when everyone went to record their results all at the same time!) I'm just old-fashioned, I guess.
To me, it's more satisfying filling in all those boxes with a pen... 'ten sparrows, eighteen starlings, two robins, and one partridge in the pear tree...'
I made that last one up. We haven't got a pear tree.
The RSPB are pretty good... I think if you don't want them to send you any bumpf, you can opt out of being on their mailing list.
I thought our bird-watch was going to be a bit of a wash-out this year, but in the end our count wasn't too bad.
Two jays, one robin, one coal-tit, a half dozen sparrows, four goldfinches, two starlings, one dunnock, and one woodpecker.
The sparrow count would probably have been higher, but the robin took exception to them and kept seeing them off. Every now and again he refuses to tolerate sparrows, but of course half an hour later they're all back again.
