Are you open to persuasion dear reader, or more to the point I recently purchased a pair of Opticron discovery’s 8 x 50, at one pound twelve ounces they are not light, however I specifically wanted them for use in low light, note large objective lens. I also decided night vision binoculars are not needed for my purpose; besides these are also fairly cheap at £ 179 but the short strap I found next to useless has I like to place the strap over the head so the binoculars hang down by the side for neck relief, used this way the weight I found no problem when walking long distance, however in the end I fitted a longer strap. I should also say they do not replace my main pair which I carry for normal use, but not at the same time of course. On the whole I found the 8 x 50 excellent for my purpose – inside woods and for viewing little owls in the evening, of course I could have paid ‘much more’ but has I am not a serious birder in the true sense of the word these suit just fine. Even so I like to travel light with just a low weight monopod for resting both the bridge camera / digiscope on both (rarely used) but I also find the monopod very handy for resting binoculars on especially for long periods recording little owl behaviour.
I should have mentioned the strap I used is adjustable and two inches wide which amounts to the same thing really, call me old fashion but I am a bit of a plain Jane man myself and much prefer the home made bespoke look, ‘far more’ reliable.
