I think most corvids are good mimics, whilst walking around the lake last year mid day-ish I heard an owl but a very quite owl gently hooting away. That can't be right I though too quite and after ten minutes I located the culprit a Jay quietly burbling away to it's self and throwing in the owl hoot ian
Our jays make a very quiet 'merr-ow' sound when they are talking to each other... I've seen several comments in articles about them that they are mimicking cats, but I honestly don't think that's what they're doing. In this case, I think it's simply a conversational sound that they're making when they speak normally to each other. I only hear them make their famous shriek when they are startled or as a warning call.
If they are waiting in the trees whenever I go out to put their nuts on the table in the morning, they'll sometimes make that same noise to me- as though they are telling me to hurry up with their breakfast.
