Lots of birds at Rainham + lots of youngsters with plenty of goslings, ducklings as well as Redshank + Lapwing chicks. Cetti's + Reed warblers were singing everywhere. I did see a stalking Heron take a young Coot + was then attacked by a Canada Goose but the Heron flew off with its prey pursued by Redshanks.
My highlights were several Little Egrets, a Greenshank, a couple of Bearded Tits flying by the path + a pair of Marsh Harriers.
My BOTD is the humble house sparrow. My tiny garden was buzzing with them today. There were at least 30. I'm so glad they are doing well round my way.
Yes, ours are doing well, too- yesterday a small flock were busy picking up the millet I'd scattered on the path for them, and this morning they were cleaning up the seed I dropped while filling their feeders.
Some interesting behaviour today. We were moving slowly in our vehicle down a quiet leafy residential road near Hampstead Heath when a Jay caught my eye swooping around in the air in front of us though fly catching. As I looked more carefully I could see it was in fact trying to snatch a recently fledged Blue Tit from the air. The youngster managed to avoid the first couple of attempts by the Jay. I didn't see the final outcome but I suspect the youngster didn't survive.
Many years ago I saw similar behaviour from a Jay that successfully captured a House Sparrow fledgeling from the air.
